Southern California hospitals account for over half of the state’s top 25 hospitals in new quality rankings from the US News & World Report. Two hospitals, Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach and the UCI Medical Center in Orange, made it to the top 10.
An evaluation was conducted to over 4,600 medical facilities in the US to create the country’s annual “best” list. The list also includes rankings by state and assessment of the quality of specialized care departments, such as cancer, neurosurgery, geriatrics, cardiology, and knee replacement.
For several years, Hoag Hospital has been acknowledged for its outstanding performance when it comes to safety and clinical outcomes. This recognition had made the hospital stand out among some top-ranking hospitals in the country. According to Michael Ricks, Hoag’s Chief Operating Officer, “You want to go to a hospital that has a great reputation, but you really want to go to a hospital that’s going to take great care of you.”
Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian ranked 8th among the best hospitals in California. It also ranked 1st in Orange County with UCI Medical Center on the 2nd spot.
Hoag and UCI both got three out of five stars on patient experience and acknowledged for high nurse staffing levels in the new rankings. Both medical facilities made it on the U.S. List of News & World Report’s best hospitals before. Included in the list recognized are UCI’s pediatric intensive care unit and fertility clinic.
The Duarte-based City of Hope’s cancer care facility ranked 11th in the best cancer hospitals in the US. This specialty care area invests about $1 billion in the construction and operation of a new Irvine Cancer Center.
Other Orange County facilities who got recognized include the Mission Hospitals of Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach which ranked 13th place. St. Jude in Fullerton and the MemorialCare Saddleback Memorial in Laguna Hills landed on the 22nd spot.
One of the top-performing medical centers, the UCLA Medical Center, ranked first among California hospitals and landed the 6th spot in the entire country.
